What is it to be a data scientist during the era of Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, and continuously changing technology? Here at Symbiosis Institute of Geoinformatics (SIG), we don’t just learn about data-instead, we’re crafting the future through data. Being an MSc student in Data Science and Spatial Analytics, I’ve been privileged to see how SIG is preparing students with advanced skills and encouraging innovation, research, and industry preparedness.
The field of data science is really expanding rapidly, and at SIG, we are discovering how to keep pace with it in the optimal manner. Our courses provide us with a proper grounding in technologies such as Python and R, and we learn significant topics such as Statistics, Machine Learning, and Big Data with technologies such as Hadoop and Spark. We also get to delve into interesting topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, Spatial Modeling, Blockchain, Computer Vision, and even Generative AI. What distinguishes SIG is how we learn—not only from textbooks, but also through actual projects, lab work, and industry visits that expose us to how these technologies are applied in real life. We regularly get guest speakers and participate in hackathons, which keep us current and make us better problem solvers. With excellent labs and a supportive community, SIG enables us not only to comprehend data, but to leverage it to effect real change.
Life in SIG is not all about learning – it’s packed with excitement, learning, and experiences. Beyond the classroom, something new is always happening. My favorite aspect of it is NirvAI, our club for Artificial Intelligence. It really makes technology come alive for us. From hackathons and coding challenges to guest speakers and workshops, there’s always something new occurring that keeps us curious and informed about AI and data science. But SIG is not just about technology. The campus has a firm belief in overall development. One of the most thrilling periods of the year is our cultural fest, Khula Manch. The campus is filled with music, dance, drama, and art. People come together and celebrate, perform, and just enjoy themselves. And then there’s Khula Maidan, our sports fest, where we get to compete, cheer, and experience the vibe of teamwork and athleticism. All of these things, coupled with what we do in class, make student life here truly special. It’s just the right combination of learning and having fun, and to be honest, it’s what makes SIG feel like more than just a college – it feels like a place where we develop as people and create memories that last a lifetime.
With each passing day at SIG, as I continue to learn and grow, I genuinely feel that it’s shaping us into much more than just professionals. It’s making us learn how to become future leaders who can work with data to create meaningful, positive change. With each project we work on, each field visit we take, and each real problem we solve, we’re learning how to think more effectively, adapt rapidly, and act with confidence. At SIG, we’re not just creating careers; we’re creating a future we can believe in.
